The Digital Desktops System comprises a desktop appliance and DWorks, an administration interface utility. These system components provide an open architecture solution for centralized computing that satisfies both IT managers and end-users. IT managers gain greater computer security and get a solution that saves money by minimizing maintenance costs, and end-users retain the same familiar features and functionality but without the PC chassis present. Within the Digital Desktops System, a small footprint desktop appliance resides at each user's desk, allowing PCs to be rackmounted to a remote, central location. The appliance is then connected through standard Ethernet cabling, either point-to-point or through a layer-2 gigabit switch, to a PCI add-in card installed in the remote PC. This configuration maintains the critical one-to-one relationship between a user and their assigned PC, preserving the traditional PC experience for each user. The L-series appliance supports user peripherals with connections supporting PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse, on-board video, audio, serial port, and USB 1.1. It also has a PCI slot for inserting a PCI based add-in card.
