This Router Processing Unit (RPU) module provides the routing engine for the 3Com Router 6040 and Router 6080. The RPU functions primarily to process protocols, forward packets and control interfaces, and detect faults. State monitoring information, such as the operation states of FAN, PWR, and system can be shown directly via the LEDs on the RPU, or reported to the network management system.The RPU also includes two 10/100BaseTX ports for local LAN connection, AUX, Console port, 512MB DRAM, 32MB Flash and LED indicators.This module is required and provides the routing engine for operation of the Router 6040 or Router 6080. It provides advanced security and control for VPN, stateful firewall and encryption services, as well as voice and data integration, QoS, and multi-cast routing It is standards-based and interoperable with the following protocols: IP, IPX, RIP V1/V2, OSPF, BGP-4, MPLS, and integrated IS-IS (IP), as well as next-generation ready for the support of MPLS VPN.Resilience features include: hot-swappable modules, available redundant power, and dual software images.
