Serial Host Adapters provides two PCI bus links for communication servers, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and other data-collection devices. Each card has two or more UARTs (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitters), which are integrated circuits that convert bytes from the computer bus into serial bits for transmission. Since the adapters enable use of PCI bus slots, you're not limited to using ISA slots only. Integration problems are a thing of the past with the adapters, since they support all PCI interrupts, giving you more IRQs to choose from when installing.
