The Aurora Galaxy series of four- and eight-port WAN communications serial controllers provides synchronous data transfer rates up to 64 kbps and asynchronous data transfer rates up to 115.2 kbps. The Galaxy series is compatible with SPARC workstations or servers with SBus running Solaris 2.5 or higher or SunOS 4.1.3 or higher. Use the Galaxy series to access public data networks, link central locations to branch offices, connect high-speed modem banks and DSUs, and add peripherals to department LANs, all from one system slot. It offers many benefits over conventional Ethernet-based routers including higher throughput, reduced LAN traffic, conservation of CPU resources, easier installation and administration, and substantial cost savings. The Galaxy series supports Aurora and Solstice (SunLink) communications protocols including Frame Relay, X.25, SNA, PPP, HDLC, and SDLC. Aurora also offers a Driver Developer Kit for custom protocol development. Interface options for the Galaxy series include RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 with DB-25 connectors. On-board intelligent controllers, large 8 KB dual-ported data buffers, and on-board hardware (out of band) and software (in band) flow control assure data integrity while off-loading communications processing from the host CPU. Hardware is only as efficient as the software that governs its operation. Aurora device drivers have been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the unique features of the SunOS and Solaris environments. They have been precisely engineered to assure efficient I/O processing, flow control, and resource management. General-purpose device drivers are no match. Aurora products install in minutes instead of hours or days. Configuration is accomplished using the same easy-to-use Sun system administration tools used to configure the native ports of a Solaris system.
